Brisbane
Putting Faces to Names
Posted: Sep. 01, 2008

There are quite a few Brisbane VTers, so I thought it might be fun to have a get together so that we can put faces to the names. At this stage, I am thinking that somewhere pretty central might be a good idea, so here are a few suggestions that we can maybe consider and vote on. Chez Laila at Southbank, The Deck overlooking the river at Merthyr Bowls Club at New Farm or maybe the Gardens Cafe in the city. Can anyone suggest any more suitable places? I lean more towards a place that has a nice outlook, supplies liquor, coffee and food all as options for those who wish to partake of one or all of them. Have a think about it and let's all make an effort to get there if possible and of course it goes without saying that out of towners or indeed folk from ouside of Australia will also be most welcome. In fact, it would be really great to have some visitors along to make the conversation even more interesting. Please indicate your interest ASAP so that I can start organising bookings etc. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. I look forward to hearing from as many of you as possible. Looking at a 1pm start.

UPDATE: One member has suggested a barbecue in New farm Park which is easily accessibly by City Cat. I really like this idea as it will be far more relaxed and if there are quite a few people we can easily move around and chat. If there are no objections, we will probably go with this idea. If you wish to come but don't like the BBQ idea, please contact me ASAP.

UPDATE UPDATE: New Farm Park it is. 1pm Sunday January 18,2009. Bring your own meat and drinks and maybe a small salad, sweet or nibblies to share. I will advise everyone closer to time of the exact location of the meet.

2nd Annual Manchester Christmas Markets Meet
Posted: Jan. 14, 2008

Fellow VTers

You are cordially invited to come along and participate in the delights and delicacies offered by the Manchester Christmas Markets.

As we did last year, we will meet outside Starbucks on the corner of Princess Street (which runs alongside Manchester Town Hall) and Clarence Street. At the request of some attending, we will meet earlier at 11:00am.

This is a very informal meeting, giving VTers chance to spend time at the stalls around the various market sites and we will have a number of reconvening locations and times so that we can re-group before moving on to the next market area.

The day will finish at The Old Wellington Inn on Cathedral Gates near the Triangle Shopping Centre, Harvey Nicks and Selfridges.

Wrap up warm and bring something to keep the rain off (preferably not an umbrella as the Markets tend to be very busy and brollies get tangled up and there is the potential for accidents).

*** Want to stay overnight? Check out this deal! ***

2nd annual Shinjuku VT meet!
Posted: Jul. 24, 2008

Hi everyone, I am coming back to Tokyo this year and will hold my second annual Shinjuku VT meet. Last year was so much fun that I have to do it again. This year will be twice the fun and maybe twice the people.

Time: 7pm

Where: We will meet on the east side of Shinjuku station, just outside the gate. There is a huge parking area with lots of taxis and such. I will hang around and wait till about 7:15, so try to make it by then.

Place: We are going here, Sangoku-ichi. It is an udon restaurant. Prices are good, the food is good and it is a great place to have a party.

They are 3 branches in Shinjuku; we will go to the one closest to the east exit of Shinjuku station.

The number is 03-3354-3591.

address:

住所 新宿3丁目24-8 モアセン2479;ービル

You can check out the website here (also the map)
http://www.sangokuichi.co.jp/shops/shop_east.html

We WILL be doing nomihodai (all you can drink). We got a great deal, 1,500 yen for 2 hours! Its a steal at that price!

Also, two of my friends will be visiting from New York. Thought it would be great to show them how great Tokyo is.

Hope to see you in Tokyo!

VT meeting in Irish Village, Dubai on 29.08.2008.
Posted: Aug. 17, 2008

Well hello there all the VT members, either residents or visitors to Dubai. I am posting on Behalf of Hamed (VT name smarty29) which this meeting was his idea. We are planning a get-together for Friday August 29th, 2008 to be started at 8:00 P.M. in Irish Village. The meeting is almost before starting the Holy month of Ramadan (for the Hijri year of 1429). Irish Village is one of the best meeting places in my opinion and they have a wide range of food and beverages on their Menu.
If you are interested to attend please sign in so we can arrange a table in advance. The meeting is planned for the purpose of having some friendly chat, lots of laugh, taking a delicious food and probably shooting some photos to be our memory for the coming years and possibly forever :-). To make it easier for everybody, please check their official web site which a location map and contact details of the club is available on the site. Their URL is as following:

http://www.irishvillage.ae/

The Location map URL:

http://www.irishvillage.ae/contact_us/map/

The Aviation Club is situated on the north side of Al Garhoud Bridge adjacent to the Emirates Airlines Training Centre. Tel: 04 / 2824750/2
Ample car parking is available.

You all take care and hopefully will see you all in the meeting :-)

****IMPORTANT NOTICE****
Because of the heat I will get indoor of the Irish Village as they have aircondition. I try to find a table so will sit there until all the members get in and then maybe we can bring and join two tables together so it can accommodate more individuals. Preferebly on the smokers side of the indoor section!! :-) So when arriving at or about 8:00 P.M. just get inside the Pub and look for members table.

Yes, it's time for another VT meeting! Marion (Mazzap) and her family will be visiting Malta yet again and so will Ian (Dick_33) and his partner. I'm not exactly sure about the venue just yet, but was thinking about Zeppi's in Balluta Bay, St Julians at 8pm....any suggestions are welcome.

Zeppi's restaurant has a small outdoor section with a nice view of Balluta Bay which is ideal for the summer months. The food is really good and reasonably priced.

Looking forward to seeing all my VT friends, those I've met and perhaps some new ones too. Do join us if you're visiting Malta! Write to me if you need transport!

Football, at the Euromeet2008
Posted: Apr. 01, 2008

Football (Soccer for the Americans) enthusiasts her is your chance!

We are a few football enthusiasts on virtual tourist that from time to time gets to debate football in the miscellaneous forum, as we now have a enormous well attended Euromeet2008, we thing it would be a great opportunity to show our own skills be on the forum. The ABC team has made arrangements with a local club for us to use there training field and changing facilities Saturday afternoon.

All are welcome to participate no matter skills, sex, age, physical condition. We need more then 22 players and referee and linesmen.

To make it a even and fun game for all my idea is to use a system where each player rate themselves from 1 to 5 as a footballer. And then use this rating draw teams with even strength.

Now we just need to know who will like to play?

Manchester Christmas Markets & Meal
Posted: Oct. 02, 2007

Get into the Christmas spirit while we browse the traditional wooden chalets and twinkling stalls and soak up the unique bustling atmosphere.

You'll find enticing gifts including decorative pottery and ceramics, handcrafted toys and decorations, jewellery and Christmas trees, plants and bulbs from Holland. Continental sausages, roasted almonds, crêpes as well as Bavarian beer and Glühwein provide the perfect alfresco snack.

We'll meet up at 3:00pm for a walk through the various markets around Manchester city centre and then progress onwards for a meal at one of Manchester's eateries.

I'm suggesting we meet outside the Starbuck's on the corner of Princess Street, opposite the Town Hall and walk through from there. It may be that we end up just going for drinks afterwards or a meal, whatever people fancy on the day. There's lots of food (and drink) choices in the markets so people may well fill themselves up as we wander around!

*** If you're coming from farther afield, feel free to contact me regarding pointers for accommodation ***

Bridgeville
Release your Inner Hillbilly!
Posted: Sep. 25, 2007

On November 3, come to Bridgeville, Delaware, to watch the Pumpkin Chunkin' contest. Bridgeville is sort of in the middle of nowhere, so about two hours?or less?from many of the Mid-Atlantic's somewhere spots: Baltimore, DC, and Philadelphia.

We'll meet at that fabulous Jimmy's Grille in Bridgeville, probably around noon. Better fried chicken, biscuits, and pies you'd be hard pressed to find, and then we'll carpool to the Pumpkin Chunkin' field.

Cost is $7 per person, and $2 per car for parking.

We can (and should) bring food and beverages, including beer, wine, whatever; folding chairs and blankets are helpful, too.

If anyone wants to travel in for this major fest, we'll have drinks and dinner in Baltimore the night before.

This link should explain all: http://www.punkinchunkin.com/main.htm

And, this is an outdoor festival in a cornfield in rural Delaware in November. You can probably do the math on this one, but dressing in layers would make sense. And, you probably can't go wrong with anything plaid, plaid and flannel, plaid, flannel and quilted, or made by Carhart.

C'mon, it's time to release your inner hillbilly!

More specifics will be forthcoming closer to the date.

And, about the photo, it's from the Rapa Scrapple factory in Bridgeville. Sort of a landmark (maybe the only one) for me as I drive through the town to the beach.

Just 45 minutes north of Boston, Portsmouth, New Hampshire is a quaint New England seaside town with lots of history, great restaurants, museums, theatre and a working harbor offering day cruises, whale watches and deep sea fishing to visitors.

The city is also within an hour's drive of New Hampshire's Hampton Beach area and Portland, Maine.

How to Get There

Portsmouth is accessible via either Boston's Logan International Airport (BOS) or Manchester, New Hampshire's Manchester-Boston International Airport (MHT), each about 45 minutes away. Bus service to Portsmouth is available from both (www.cjtrailways.com). Portsmouth is also home to Pease International Tradeport, offering limited flights to and from Chicago and several Florida cities. The discount airline Skybus (www.skybus.com) also offers flights directly to Portsmouth (their Web site says "Boston", but it's Portsmouth.)

Where to Stay

Several hotels are available in Portsmouth, in a variety of brands and price ranges. There are three hotels and a few B&Bs in the immediate downtown area, within walking distance to all attractions, and several more hotels and B&B's a short distance away. I have a listing of low-cost and regular hotels, just email me and I'll send it your way!

Our Meeting Itinerary!(NOTE THAT SOME INFO HAS CHANGED)

On Friday the 21st there will be a drop-in happy hour from 4:30-7 PM at the Portsmouth Brewery (www.portsmouthbrewery.com). Dinner on Friday night will now be at 7:30 PM at The Rosa (http://www.therosa.com) which is a great, casual Italian place with really good pizzas and lots of other fab stuff, even seafood. **Note** For anyone who is planning to drive to The Rosa, rather than walking, they have their own free parking lot across the street.

On Saturday those who are interested can take a narrated Historic Isles of Shoals/Portsmouth Harbor cruise. The boat sails at 1:25 PM and returns to port at 4:15 PM. The cost is $25 for adults. If more than 25 people decide to go we can get a group rate, so let me know if you're interested. However, you don't need a reservation to go, so if you're one of those last-minute decision makers you can still come. If you want to read more about the boat tours you can visit the Steamship Company's web site: (www.islesofshoals.com).

If you don't have sea legs there are still a lot of fun things to do. Portsmouth is home to the beautiful Strawberry Banke Museum (www.strawberybanke.org) and the Albacore Park Maritime Museum (www.ussalbacore.org) as well as many, many unique shops, boutiques and historic homes. The city also has a theatre and a very cool independent book shop (www.riverrunbookstore.com).

Saturday night's drop-in happy hour will be at Poco's Bow St. Cantina (www.pocosbowstreetcantina.com) from (approximately) 4:30-7 PM. Dinner on Saturday will now be at The Oar House (http://www.portsmouthnh.com/oarhouse) at 7:30 PM. The Oar House serves traditional New England seafood (Lobsters!!) and also has NON-seafood items for all of you people who don't eat fish (or meat).

After dinner Saturday night those who are up for it can join us for some dancing at the Portsmouth Gaslight Company's nightclub (www.portsmouthgaslight.com/club.php). There is a small cover charge to get in. Note that if you are from outside the U.S. you MUST show your passport as ID to get into the club. People with out-of-state U.S. drivers licences can use those without a problem.

Sunday morning starting at 10:00 people will be meeting for a casual breakfast/brunch at Popovers on the Square (www.popoversonthesquare.com). This is a really nice, casual little bakery/cafe with tables outside. This will be sort of a drop-in event, as I'm not making reservations, so come when/if you can!
