Speyer |
Pre-Euromeet 2008 excursion: Speyer Posted: Dec. 29, 2007 For those of you Euromeet 2008 attendees who are in the area already Friday (May 30) and would like to do some sightseeing, I would like to offer a tour through Speyer.
Speyer is located approx. 40 km northwest of Karlsruhe, on the other side of river Rhine and quite famous for its more than 2000 years of history and had also played a major role during Reformation. It has a lot to offer, such as the Imperial Cathedral, many churches (one of them with 36 stained glass windows), cute and picturesque streets with old town flair, two famous museums, nice shops and excellent places to grab typical Palatine food. Many poets describe(d) it as ?where Palatine starts to become Italy? ? for the mild climate and the partly mediterrean flora and fauna. For further information, please see here: Speyer?s website in German: http://www.speyer.de/de Speyer?s website in English (unfortunately not as extented as the German one): http://www.speyer.de/de/tourist-en?switc City map for printout: http://www.speyer.de/de/tourist/infos/Do (Bahnhof = train station) Or have a look at my Speyer page, which is a result of several visits : http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/80c2 My suggestion for a tour would be : * meeting at 10.30, * visit of Dreifaltigkeitskirche, * visit of the Imperial Cathedral and the crypt (if of interest, I can try and organise a guided tour to the secret insides like walking on top of the central nave ? but I would need to know how many we would be first, as this depends on the amount of people), * walk west through the picturesque side streets north of Speyer?s main street, * walk on top of Altpörtel for a magnificent view of the city and her surroundings, * visit of Gedächtniskirche (Memorial Church) with 36 stained glass windows, * walk back to the cathedral along Maximilianstraße, * side trip to the Mikwe, an old Jewish ritual bath, * visit of one of the two museums: Historical Museum of Palatine: German: http://museum.speyer.de/de/histmus/samml English: http://museum.speyer.de/en/histmus/museu (or my VT page, details in the local customs section) or Technical Museum: German : http://www.museumspeyer.de/ English: http://www.technik-museum.de/uk/speyer/ or on Michael?s (@globetrott) VT page: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1ffe We should leave Speyer latest 6 p.m. (5:30 p.m. would be better) to be in Karlsruhe in time for the dinner at Badisches Brauhaus. There is a train leaving Speyer at 6 p.m. and arriving in Karlsruhe at 7 p.m. (1x changing trains in Mannheim). As soon as I have a rough idea who will attend the tour through Speyer (and who will come by car or train), I will post further details here. Looking forward to show you my most favourite German town (but well, I am biased, haha). Ingrid :-) Update: in the meantime I have made a travelogue with clickable links to the mentioned websites. Further info on how to get there and how much we might spend as expenses will follow. See here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/9 |

| Jun. 22, 2008 VT Meeting | Speyer | "Past-Euromeet" Speyer - for the Karlsruhe squad Posted: Jun. 14, 2008 Haha, I could not resist to post this as a meeting, as we could easily get together through VTmail.
But maybe someone else who is in the area would also like to join? As Bernd, Andrea, Kathrin, Christine and Heinz did have so much to do with preparation of the big meet in Karlsruhe, they didn't have time and were probably too exhausted to join us on that Friday. So in honour of their huge tasks which they managed so fantastic I thought I'd invite them to Speyer and we do a little past-meet trip through this lovely town. We should meet at 10/10:30 in front of the cathedral and can most probably visit Dreifaltigkeitskirche (it should be open on Sundays after mass), the cathedral, the historical museum (remember, there is a fantastic Samurai exhibition running), Mikwe, Altpörtel and walk through the side alleys and the cute and picturesque Hasenpfuhl. Looking forward to drag you through Speyer :-) (I would be there soon anyhow - with or without meeting) Ingrid | Trekki |
