| May. 24, 2008 VT Meeting |
Cologne |
Let's get in shape for Euromeet. Posted: Apr. 11, 2008 Hiya.
Bill (BillNJ) will spend the last day of his trip to Europe in Cologne on Saturday 24 May and we thought this was a great excuse for a meeting and a few drinks (to get in shape for Euromeet a week later in Karlsruhe). The rough itinerary is as follows: 16:00 Meet at Spire Top Cross in front of Cologne Cathedral (downstairs from the main entrance to the cathedral). You can find a pic of it here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1484 Then: Some sightseeing 19:00 Dinner at Peters Brauhaus (Mühlengasse 1, www.peters-brauhaus.de) Afterwards: Dunno. We'll decide spontaneously. As I had to sign a sheet for the dinner reservation (I booked a table for 10) and had to fax it to the pub I need to know a few days before the meeting who will be there for sure. I don't want to end up in trouble because we are less people that we thought. Thanks for letting me know asap. See you soon in Cologne. Sabs |

| May. 30, 2008 VT Meeting | Speyer | Pre-Euromeet 2008 excursion: Speyer Posted: Dec. 29, 2007 For those of you Euromeet 2008 attendees who are in the area already Friday (May 30) and would like to do some sightseeing, I would like to offer a tour through Speyer.
Speyer is located approx. 40 km northwest of Karlsruhe, on the other side of river Rhine and quite famous for its more than 2000 years of history and had also played a major role during Reformation. It has a lot to offer, such as the Imperial Cathedral, many churches (one of them with 36 stained glass windows), cute and picturesque streets with old town flair, two famous museums, nice shops and excellent places to grab typical Palatine food. Many poets describe(d) it as ?where Palatine starts to become Italy? ? for the mild climate and the partly mediterrean flora and fauna. For further information, please see here: Speyer?s website in German: http://www.speyer.de/de Speyer?s website in English (unfortunately not as extented as the German one): http://www.speyer.de/de/tourist-en?switc City map for printout: http://www.speyer.de/de/tourist/infos/Do (Bahnhof = train station) Or have a look at my Speyer page, which is a result of several visits : http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/80c2 My suggestion for a tour would be : * meeting at 10.30, * visit of Dreifaltigkeitskirche, * visit of the Imperial Cathedral and the crypt (if of interest, I can try and organise a guided tour to the secret insides like walking on top of the central nave ? but I would need to know how many we would be first, as this depends on the amount of people), * walk west through the picturesque side streets north of Speyer?s main street, * walk on top of Altpörtel for a magnificent view of the city and her surroundings, * visit of Gedächtniskirche (Memorial Church) with 36 stained glass windows, * walk back to the cathedral along Maximilianstraße, * side trip to the Mikwe, an old Jewish ritual bath, * visit of one of the two museums: Historical Museum of Palatine: German: http://museum.speyer.de/de/histmus/samml English: http://museum.speyer.de/en/histmus/museu (or my VT page, details in the local customs section) or Technical Museum: German : http://www.museumspeyer.de/ English: http://www.technik-museum.de/uk/speyer/ or on Michael?s (@globetrott) VT page: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1ffe We should leave Speyer latest 6 p.m. (5:30 p.m. would be better) to be in Karlsruhe in time for the dinner at Badisches Brauhaus. There is a train leaving Speyer at 6 p.m. and arriving in Karlsruhe at 7 p.m. (1x changing trains in Mannheim). As soon as I have a rough idea who will attend the tour through Speyer (and who will come by car or train), I will post further details here. Looking forward to show you my most favourite German town (but well, I am biased, haha). Ingrid :-) Update: in the meantime I have made a travelogue with clickable links to the mentioned websites. Further info on how to get there and how much we might spend as expenses will follow. See here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/9 | Trekki |

Euromeet 2008 Posted: Jul. 02, 2007 4th European VT-meeting Karlsruhe / Germany May 30th to June 1st, 2008 After 3 Euromeetings in Southern Europe it's finally time to go up north. And what city would be more appropriate to host a VT-meeting than the place where this great website has been invented: Karlsruhe / Germany. Most of you will know VT as a firm located in Los Angeles. But there have been times when VT was still an idea of two students of the University of Karlsruhe. They developed the software and together with an American entrepreneur they transformed it into a successful website with members all over the globe. So let's have a trip down memory lane and come to the place where it all started. Besides being the cradle of VT, Karlsruhe offers a lot of possibilities for a nice vacation. Even though the city isn't known as a major tourist spot, it has some interesting sites and is also a perfect base for trips to places like Heidelberg, the Black Forest, the Alsace region with the picturesque city of Strasbourg and so on. The weekend for the meeting has been carefully chosen. In order to keep airfares and rooms affordable we had to consider school vacations, possible trade fairs and in particular the European Football Championship in Switzerland and Austria. As the meeting is now only one week before the opening match at Basle, football fans can combine these two events. You will find info about accommodation, transportation, sightseeing tips and answers to frequently asked questions on the Euromeet2008-homepage. So have a look at this site every now and then. We are looking forward to seeing you all in Karlsruhe |

| May. 31, 2008 VT Meeting | Karlsruhe | Football, at the Euromeet2008 Posted: Apr. 01, 2008 Football (Soccer for the Americans) enthusiasts her is your chance!
We are a few football enthusiasts on virtual tourist that from time to time gets to debate football in the miscellaneous forum, as we now have a enormous well attended Euromeet2008, we thing it would be a great opportunity to show our own skills be on the forum. The ABC team has made arrangements with a local club for us to use there training field and changing facilities Saturday afternoon. All are welcome to participate no matter skills, sex, age, physical condition. We need more then 22 players and referee and linesmen. To make it a even and fun game for all my idea is to use a system where each player rate themselves from 1 to 5 as a footballer. And then use this rating draw teams with even strength. Now we just need to know who will like to play? | TheView |

Post-Euromeet-Heidelberg Tour Posted: May. 27, 2008 For those of you who are still in the area and still have some energy left after the Euromeet, I'd like to offer another tour of Heidelberg on Monday.
First I'd like to show you a lesser known part of Heidelberg, with the second castle of Heidelberg - outside only, we cannot go inside-, the St Vitus church - here we can go inside - and one of my favourite cafés - here we can definitely go inside. Then back to the main street and walk up to the "real" castle. Entrace fee for the court yard, big vat, terrace and pharmacy museum is 3 Euro. If you want to have a guided tour inside, it's another 4 Euro. Meeting point: Bismarckplatz, in front of the Galeria Kaufhof, at the modern art sculpture Meeting time: 11:00 There is a train (S-Bahn) from Karlsruhe at 9:28, arriving in Heidelberg at 10:12. Then bus # 33 to Bismarckplatz or streetcar # 5 or #21. Tickets for the S-Bahn are 9,90 Euro for a single. For travel within Heidelberg a ticket-24 is 5 Euro - for one person - and ticket-24-plus 8.50 Euro - for up to five people. These tickets have to be validated before you use them. Another option is the Baden-Württemberg ticket, 18 Euro for one person and 27 Euro for up to five. This ticket is valid on the regional trains, S-Bahn, RE and RB, also within Heidelberg, from 9 am to 3 am the next morning ( So no need to get a ticket-24). You have to write down your names on this ticket. If you buy it on the counter, it's two Euro more. Some Vters have already told me they're coming, I'm looking forward to showing you another Heidelberg. |

| Jun. 22, 2008 VT Meeting | Speyer | "Past-Euromeet" Speyer - for the Karlsruhe squad Posted: Jun. 14, 2008 Haha, I could not resist to post this as a meeting, as we could easily get together through VTmail.
But maybe someone else who is in the area would also like to join? As Bernd, Andrea, Kathrin, Christine and Heinz did have so much to do with preparation of the big meet in Karlsruhe, they didn't have time and were probably too exhausted to join us on that Friday. So in honour of their huge tasks which they managed so fantastic I thought I'd invite them to Speyer and we do a little past-meet trip through this lovely town. We should meet at 10/10:30 in front of the cathedral and can most probably visit Dreifaltigkeitskirche (it should be open on Sundays after mass), the cathedral, the historical museum (remember, there is a fantastic Samurai exhibition running), Mikwe, Altpörtel and walk through the side alleys and the cute and picturesque Hasenpfuhl. Looking forward to drag you through Speyer :-) (I would be there soon anyhow - with or without meeting) Ingrid | Trekki |

Few Sights, Lots of Pubs: A day in Düsseldorf Posted: Sep. 28, 2008 Sonja (yumyum) will finally make it to Düsseldorf on 11 October and we wouldn't be called "The usual suspects" if we weren't using this as an excuse for a little VT meeting.
The meeting probably includes a little sightseeing part in the afternoon and as well as dinner and drinks in the evening. If any other VTers happen to be around, we would be happy if you joined us. Please sign up, more details will follow! See You! Sabs sign up to attend this meeting |

| Nov. 28, 2008 VT Meeting | Karlsruhe | 5th Glühwein-Meeting Posted: Jun. 09, 2008 It's already a tradition and it's becoming more and more popular: the Glühwein-Meeting at Karlsruhes christmas-market. So let's get together for some hot cups of Glühwein (mulled wine) and a chat with a bunch of nice VTers.
As usual we will have an additional visit of a nearby christmas market on Saturday as well. And if there is good weather we could even have an excursion to the nearby Black Forest. We will meet at 6 pm in front of the big church at the marketplace. After exploring some of the Glühwein stalls we will spend the rest of the night at the restaurant Multikulti next to Karlsruhes palace. I've reserved a table there at 8 pm. And if you are not sure what to expect from a Glühwein-Meeting just have a look on the report of a previous one. sign up to attend this meeting | Bernd_L |
